Oxford, UK: Social work researcher Alex Sam presented a study connecting literature, orphanhood and child welfare at the 7th Global Conference on Children and Youth, held in Oxford, UK, from 20 to 22 August 2026.
His research paper, “Orphan Care Versus Family Care: An Ideological Study on Children in Orphanages and Foster Care vs Families,” examines different forms of care available to children without conventional family support.

Alex Sam, associated with the International Leadership Development Centre, India, presented his findings before an international gathering of researchers, social workers, academics and child welfare practitioners.
The study takes an interdisciplinary approach by examining orphanhood through literary and social work perspectives. It compares family-based care with foster and institutional systems and considers the experiences associated with growing up in different environments.
The research discusses famous literary characters including Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre, Huckleberry Finn and Harry Potter. These examples help illustrate how children outside conventional families have been represented across different periods of literature.
Alex Sam’s work also examines the influence of such representations on broader cultural perceptions of orphanhood. The research considers how literary narratives can contribute to discussions about social policy, child protection and alternative care.
The presentation placed particular attention on emotional security, belonging, stability and supportive relationships. These factors were discussed in relation to the wider development and well-being of children.
Alex Sam also emphasised the importance of moving toward evidence-based approaches that can strengthen support for vulnerable children. Family support and community involvement were highlighted as important areas for continued discussion.
His educational background includes business administration and social work, while his current academic interests include social work, child welfare and family-based care.
The global conference allowed participants from different disciplines to exchange knowledge and explore emerging approaches to children’s welfare.
For Alex Sam, the Oxford presentation represents a meaningful academic and professional achievement and an opportunity to contribute research-based perspectives to the international dialogue surrounding vulnerable children.
